Cherokee Coalition For Responsible Growth
We face an issue in Cherokee County that could forever change this County. A Sewer Plant is proposed to provide sewer service to the North East Region of Cherokee County and areas of both Forsyth and Fulton Counties.
What does that mean? What Can You Do?
The public hearing on the request for a permit by Cherokee Water and Sewerage Authority (CCWSA) on March 18 drew about 100 people. At least 60% of the room were people opposed to the permit. Nine speakers spoke against the permit, and five speakers from the property rights group spoke for the permit.
We all felt that our presentation went well and we thank those of you who attended and spoke. We presented the facts and the scientific data to show that the lake has already exceeded the allowable level of pollution under the Clean Water Act. We asked that EPD deny this permit until the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) study is completed next year. We feel based on the current data, this permit will not be allowed next year. We had a power-point presentation on the history of the pollution levels along with graphs to show what levels are currently permitted compared to what the plants are using. The lake has exceeded allowable levels of pollution with their current discharge at only 44% of what their current permits allow to be discharged. We feel we made some very valid points concerning water quality and hope EPD agrees. . More information...
Why should you be concerned?
Cherokee County is struggling to serve its existing residents. Sewer could bring more population at a faster rate than what is currently planned through the year 2030, resulting in the following:
- 40,000 new, unplanned homes, town homes, condos and apartments to this area which is designated as low density through the year 2030
- 30,000 more students to our already overcrowded school system
- 80,000 additional cars to our roads
- Increased property taxes to pay for the infrastructure to support all of this unplanned growth
- Increased water & sewer rates to pay for this plant. More information...
Do we have enough water for this explosive growth?
Are we willing to let Cherokee County become the next Cobb or Gwinnett?
What Can You Do?
